The Only Trailer Park Historically Designated is Here in Highland Park

The Monterrey Trailer park, located on Monterrey Road in the Hermon area of Highland Park, is a Los Angeles Historical Cultural Landmark.

It’s origin dates back 97 year ago, when Elmer Drummond decide to create an “auto camp” for drivers to have somewhere to rest overnight. Eventually, as motels and campgrounds evolved, the Monterrey Auto Camp became irrelevant, and turned into the Monterey Trailer Park.

When you walk in to the park, you can still witness some of the original buildings used in the original auto camp, intact, and converted into residences.

The historic designation came about when a long-term resident was unable to purchase the park. Since he couldn’t make it his own, he decided to pushed for it to become a landmark, that way it belonged to everybody. However, this kept the owner from making any changes.
