For those seeking a breath of fresh air and an escape into nature, take a look at this list of great local campsites.

Big Sycamore Campground, just across the Ventura county line offers beach access and hiking trails for multiple skill levels. About 50 miles from LA, this campsite has token-operated showers, toilets, fire rings, ADA accessible sites, and RV stations. Camping is just $45 a night. This special campground is also one of the premier spots in Southern California to observe the Monarch butterfly migration. Find a good LED flashlight review, stock up on trail mix, and come visit this fall to catch the butterflies on their journey!
For those who don’t mind driving just a little bit further, the Carpinteria State Beach campground offers an interesting taste of car-free camping. 80 miles from LA, this camp site is serviced by the Amtrak Coast Starlight Train and is within walking distance to the beach. Take the two hour ride on the train and access this campground on foot or by bike to enjoy fire rings, ADA accessible sites, and flush toilets. If you are looking to try your luck, head over to McGarth State Beach, a popular year-round campground for a chance to snag one of the first-come first-served 40 camp sites. Just 62 miles from LA, this campground offers beautiful beachfront sites with Toiletable units, showers, fire rings, ADA accessible sites, and a visitor center. The early bird gets the work and this highly desirable campground so be prepared to move on to a backup campsite if you don’t get a site at McGarth! This camp ground costs $45 a night during the peak season in spring and summer, and $35 in the off-season. This campground also has a “hike and bike” deal for just $10 a night.
