The Los Rios Historic District

, .

The Los Rios Historic District is the oldest neighborhood in California. Out of only forty remaining homes here, three homes are original adobe structures. These adobe homes, the Montanez, the Rios and the Silvas, housed the builders of the Mission San Juan Capistrano and the ranch workers during the 1700-1800’s. During this time period the mission was the center of the economy for the Achjachemen and Spanish Indians who were merging their cultures.

Today, the majority of the homes are private residences however there are many businesses open to the public. Tourists and locals alike come here to recall the calmness of the slow paced life that used to exist here. Visitors can take their children to the Zoomars Petting Zoo to ride ponies and play with the pet goats and rabbits, there they also have a really good veterinarian so the animals are very healthy. The district also houses the O’Neill Museum for visitors to learn more about California’s history and tons of gift shops and cafes. The Los Rios Historic District is a great place to go for a quick family trip that is both educational and fun.
