Did You Know Service Dogs Are Considered a Necessity?

Service Dog

“Emotional support animals and service animals both provide valuable service to individuals with disabilities. Under federal law, though, these two terms are not the same — and thus, should not be interchanged.”
HOA Management

There are 3 types of pets according to berding-well.

  1. Service Animal: This is an animal who provides “a service” in order to assist an individual who has a disability. Examples are a Seeing Eye dog; dogs that alert those with hearing impairments; who pull wheelchairs or who pick things up. A service animal does not need to be licensed or certified however requires special training. A service animal should not be considered or analyzed as a “pet.” Under the ADA, a service animal can only be a trained dog or a trained miniature horse.
  2. Companion Animal: This is an animal also known as an “Emotional Support Animal” who provides emotional support to whomever has a psychiatric disability. This type of animal does not need to be licensed, certified or trained. It also is not a “pet” for purposes of disability law.
  3. Pet: This is an animal kept by the resident. It does does not perform a legally accepted function necessary for someone who is considered disabled.
