Have Heard of Community Fridges in LA?

Working, clean, and stocked fridges are showing up around LA with free food for the community. These fridges are a part of the Los Angeles Community Fridges, a network of fridges ran by the community to provide free food across the city, not as charity, but as mutual-aid.

The network counts with more than 60 people supporting it, along with businesses, organizations, and individuals committed to host and sustain their fridge. You can find one in Highland Park, South L.A., Long Beach, Exposition Park, Arlington Heights and in Mid-City, and are painted in bright colors, with a “Free Food” or “Take What You Nee, Leave What You Don’t” sign.

This was inspired by a New York City project like it, in efforts to fill the gap between food waste and hunger. These fridges are also completely un-monitored, open day and night, and there are no limits as to what you can take. In any one these fridges, you can find necessities like , milk, eggs, cheese, kale, and much more.

As the pandemic has made it especially difficult for those who have lost jobs or income to find the right resources, these mutual-aid project helps everyone connect those who want to help however they can, with those needing some aid during these times.
