Experience of Magic of the Butterfly Pavilion!
Are you ready to experience something new? Something unusual? Springtime is in the air, and so are Monarch butterflies. Every year, over 30 butterfly species move into to the Butterfly pavilion, an open air living habitat at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles. This summer take a stroll through the mystical ecosystem and witness free-flying butterflies as they interact with the plants in their world. Slow down and watch these spectacular and delicate creatures up close.

Witness caterpillars feed on leaves and butterflies feed on nectar. Watch the amazing metamorphosis as caterpillars undergo their change. As the summer goes on, the plants will grow and change which alters the environment for the butterflies, and as a result, the variety of butterfly species can change significantly at different points in the year presenting a new and exciting experience every time. This is a great family event.
Here is a little taste of what you can expect to see this summer!
20 species of California natives such as the Monarch, Mourning Cloak, and Buckeye
10 species of subtropical varieties from south Florida and Texas, such as the Malachite and the Grey Cracker
If that wasn’t enough butterfly excitement for you, just outside the entrance to the Butterfly Pavilion, a team of NHM citizen scientists and gardening experts are opening the new Monarch Waystation, where visitors can see every milestone and metamorphosis in a Monarch’s life — from eggs to caterpillars to chrysalises to the adult butterfly.
Much of the Monarchs’ natural habitat no longer exists due to urban development and widespread use of herbicides. Learn from expert how to create your own Monarch Waystation to protect these stunning creatures. For more information check out the Natural History Museum website!
