City Park Atop the 134 Freeway in Glendale!

Looking for an exciting new place to explore in the heart of downtown Glendale? The city of Glendale has exciting plans to cap a section of the 134 Freeway to create a 24-acre green space for a city park. This park will serve to link downtown Glendale with its residential neighbors. Plans for a restaurant, mobility hub with bike parking and rental facility, and transit connections are in the works for the downtown oriented segment of the park between Central Avenue and Louise.

On the residential side, from Louise to Balboa, we can expect more family oriented facilities including a playground and several community and sports centers. This project, referred to as Space 134, will also hold three event spaces for festivals and walking trails that run the length of the park.

From Louise east to Balboa, in the more residential areas, there would be a playground, community centers, and sports courts. There would be three event spaces throughout Space 134, but the one in the downtown section could handle large-scale events like festivals. Much-desired walking trails will run the length of the cap park.

This project is scheduled to be built in phases and extend for .7 miles of the freeway between Central and Balboa Avenue. The first phase is set to be built between Central Avenue and Brand Boulevard. Glendale hopes to start construction in 2020 and the project is based on both private and public funding.
