5 Fun & Free Things to do in LA

As a local who was born and raised in LA, it’s quite easy to take this beautiful city for granted.

Just like anyone who lives here, you quickly find out how pricey it can be to explore Los Angeles.  But with a little creativity and open-mindedness, there are a ton of gems out there that can lead to fun-filled activities!

The cost of living here in LA can be vastly different than what most folks are used to, and so you’d think that having fun on a budget is a tall order.  I’d like to share my 5 favorite ‘fun and free’ things to do in LA!  And not to sound too trite, but sometimes the best things in life really are free.

1. Hiking

Despite growing up in the city, I really love hiking!  There’s something very primal about being out on the trails and surrounding yourself with nature.  There are actually quite a bit of hiking trails from Malibu all the way through San Gabriel Valley.  Most of these trails have spectacular views of Los Angeles.

2. DTLA Art Walk

The LA Art Walk is one of the coolest events you can check out if you haven’t already.  It’s held every second Thursday of the month and because it’s a self-guided tour, you can actually discover parts of DTLA that you probably wouldn’t have before, especially from within a car.

3. LACMA

The Los Angeles County Museum of Art is another fun place to check out.  Notice a pattern of interest in art? There’s quite a few exhibits that are free to look at.  On select days, LACMA also offers free admission.  Some of them, however, require that you be a Los Angeles County resident so be sure to double check before you go.

4. The Griffith Observatory

This is another one of my all time favorite places to go.  This , . observatory has so much history.  Not only can you stargaze and look at gigantic telescopes, but you can hangout with James Dean or even hang about where he filmed his awesome knife fight scene.  You can also enjoy a beautiful daytime or night time hike, look off into Mt. Hollywood or even enjoy a sunset picnic.

5. The Beach

This had to be an obvious choice right?  You did come to Los Angeles to enjoy our almost perfect all-year round weather!  One of the best things of being in LA is that we have an entire coastline to choose from.  Stretching out from Malibu, Santa Monica, Venice and all the way down through Long Beach, Huntington Beach and Newport Beach.  The choice is yours!

There’s so many things to do in this great city we call home, and all without having to break the bank!  As a native to LA, it’s very easy to take this city for granted, but it’s gems like these that remind me to really appreciate Los Angeles.
